Algerians Need Your Help to Get Their Voice Back on Facebook

Dear Facebook Executives,
We, Algerians, are writing to draw your attention to the fact that it has become virtually impossible for us to use Facebook lately. Our accounts are being systematically crippled or disabled. Our pages are routinely shutdown and reappropriated by fake accounts and troll farms operating from Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE for the most part. We are bombarded by indecent insults and subjected to ceaseless harassment. We are no longer able to express ourselves freely on Facebook, which is unfortunate given that Facebook is supposed to be a space of freedom of expression.
Algeria is undergoing a peaceful revolution since February 22nd, 2019. Algerians, in the millions, have been protesting against an authoritarian regime that continues to deny them their most basic human rights. This undemocratic military regime ruling the country is using the same tactics used in Sudan and elsewhere. We urge you to take the necessary steps to restore to Algerians their voice on Facebook. At this very moment, Algerians are subjected to an asymmetrical psychological war by the ruling military junta and their allies in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and beyond.
There is growing evidence of collusion between the UAE, host to Facebook’s regional MENA headquarters and which is responsible for moderating all Arabic language content, and the Algerian military junta.
Against this backdrop, we urge Facebook to:
Stay neutral and refrain from any interference in Algerian politics. , Today, Facebook, consciously or otherwise, is being used as a repressive tool by the military junta to crush a people in revolt.
ُEnsure the safety of the platform for users to express themselves freely and take decisive action against troll farms, fake accounts and bots operated by private companies, state and parastatal bodies to muzzle and censure freedom of speech in Algeria. We have compiled a list of fake accounts and their related network that we can share with you
Institute, like Twitter, a Public Interest policy that allows posts, accounts and pages to stay up even if they get bombarded by trolls and bots
Carry out due diligence and exercise the necessary levels of oversight on Facebook regional arms in the UAE and elsewhere to put an immediate end to this policy of censorship and impunity.
History teaches us that technological innovation can be a double edged sword. The same splitting of the atom that has enabled humanity to make giant leaps in medicine and save countless lives has also led to the development of weapons of mass destruction. Digital innovation is no exception to this rule. While it contains within it the potential to be a liberatory tool for the oppressed and downtrodden, it is also liable to becoming a tool of oppressive and unjust forces.
Algerians will never remain indifferent in the face of oppression, powerful as it may be. While we have no wish to make enemies, we never shy away from confronting our oppressors and their accomplices.
We trust that you will heed our calls and place your company firmly on the right side of history.
